Acadie, Then and Now: A People’s History, written under the direction of Warren Perrin, Mary Broussard Perrin and Phil Comeau (published by Andrepont Publishing, L.L.C., Opelousas, La. 2014), has 65 articles contributed by 55 authors about the Acadian experience in Louisiana, Texas, Maine and Maryland, the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Quebec, and the French regions of Poitou, Belle-Ile-en-Mer and St. Pierre et Miquelon.
The award-winning, international work, whose authors were honored to receive the Prix France Acadie 2015, is notable for its comprehensive and markedly inclusive representation of Acadian culture, as it was at the time of the forced deportation of the Acadians by the British, and as it is today. A story told through music, cooking, art, photographs, geography, scholarly research, tourism, and the first-person, historical narratives of an Acadian - Cajun people, Acadie Then and Now holds significance for the Association des Acadiens-Métis Souriquois (AAMS) of Nova Scotia. The AAMS is featured in the chapter titled, “The Métis of Mi’kmaq and Acadian Origins." In this chapter, author Marie Rundquist references historical facts and photographs to describe the inter-related experience of Acadians and Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, PEI and Newfoundland, and makes note of Native American bloodlines within Acadian families, including those deported from their homelands by the British in 1755. In the section, “The Métis Today,” Rundquist observes that “Métis” is the term used to describe people of mixed native and European origin and then illustrates how the term applies to the culturally distinct Métis Acadian/Mi’kmaq, for example, and surveys several Métis organizations, including the AAMS. Quoted in the same section of the chapter, “The Métis of Mi’kmaq and Acadian Origins," is Paul Comeau Tufts, co-founder and the recently-elected president of the AAMS.
